PSYCHIATRY
Psychiatry is the medical specialty that deals with identifying the causes, diagnosis, prevention and treatment of mental disorders.
The psychiatric interview is the basic diagnostic technique in psychiatry. During the psychiatric interview, the doctor discovers particular aspects of the patient's life, using the DSM-IV TR (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, revised edition) and ICD 10 (International Classification of Diseases) diagnostic criteria. Examination of cognitive status, neuropsychological testing, routine laboratory tests, and imaging help identify causes of mental illness.
Psychiatric disorders can be grouped into: affective disorders (major depression, bipolar disease), cognitive disorders (multi-infarct dementia, Alzheimer's dementia, delirium), anxiety disorders (panic attacks, obsessive-compulsive disorder), personality disorders, psychotic (schizophrenia), substance addiction (drugs, alcohol, tobacco).
