HEMATOLOGY

Hematology is the branch of medicine that deals with the study, diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the blood and hematopoietic organs - red bone marrow, spleen, liver, lymph nodes.

Blood is a vital liquid, existing in the blood vessels, with multiple roles. Blood is pumped by the heart through a system of vessels, represented by the circulatory system. In addition to the role of transporting oxygen from the lungs to all tissues, and vice versa to take up carbon dioxide, transporting nutrients, it is also responsible for the activities of the immune system, helping to fight infections.

Blood is produced in the red bone marrow that is inside the bones, the latter representing the main organ of hematopoiesis. Hematopoiesis is the process of formation of blood cell elements - erythrocytes (red cells) with the role of transporting oxygen and carbon dioxide, leukocytes (white cells) with a role in immunity and platelets with a role in blood coagulation, at the level of the bone marrow.

Hematological diseases can be grouped into benign or malignant conditions. Benign hematological diseases such as anemia, hemophilia, autoimmune thrombopenia, require careful and long-term follow-up and require long-term treatments. Malignant hematological diseases usually have a sudden onset in good health, with a rapid evolution and, if not diagnosed in time, can be fatal, such as acute leukemia. Oncological hematology is a branch of hematology that studies malignant diseases - acute leukemias, lymphomas, myelodysplastic or myeloproliferative syndromes and many others.

The hematologist specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of blood diseases such as anemia (decrease in the number of red blood cells), leukopenia (decrease in the number of white blood cells), thrombopenia (decrease in the number of platelets in the blood

The diagnosis of hematological diseases often requires the performance of special maneuvers such as bone marrow punctures and osteomedullary biopsies, indispensable investigations in confirming the condition and verifying the response to treatment.

Considering the increased incidence of hematological disorders in all age groups, hematology has become a field of great interest, proven by the great progress made in recent years in the development of diagnosis, prognosis and medical treatments.
